Our Founders

Dedicated to providing the best care for our residents

Tara and Patrice Durant met in secondary (middle) school many years ago and have been together since that time. A story woven together for over 40years; it can almost be told in one breath. They got married, migrated to the United States, raised 3 children, and pursued nursing careers to accumulate a combined 30+years of experience. Shortly after arriving to the United States, they were introduced to the concept of assisted living - a model that was unfamiliar to them due to cultural differences. Over time, as they pursued their own careers in healthcare and navigated the responsibility and emotional stress of caring for aging parents, that initial curiosity evolved into something more. They saw a gap in the available care options, and a vision began to take shape.

Their journey led them to a realization: there were three main types of assisted living options—luxury hotel-feel settings, commercial-feel mid-level facilities, and private home-base settings. They wanted to create something that offered the best of these choices—luxury without sacrificing the comfort of home. Hibiscus House was born from their personal experiences, professional insights, and a commitment to enriching the lives of the seniors they care for.

Tara was born and raised on the island of Barbados. She grew up in a large family and enjoys large gatherings. Her biggest influence is her older sister who was an accountant in a travel agency. Tara loved the idea of traveling and what better way to start than a summer job where her sister worked. After graduation, Tara continued in the travel industry until migrating to the US with her husband.

With a master's-level education and a background as a nursing educator, Tara ensures that Hibiscus House residents receive the highest level of care. Her expertise goes beyond clinical skills; she is passionate about creating a training program that helps staff deliver care that is both skillful and empathetic. At Hibiscus House, training is a priority, and the staff is equipped with the knowledge and tools they need to provide top-notch care with a distinctive touch.

Her diligence also ensures that the home adheres strictly to the rules and regulations that govern the assisted living industry, giving families peace of mind knowing that their loved ones are in safe, capable hands.

Patrice, BSN, RN, DN, CDP

Born in England and raised in Barbados, Patrice grew up with a deep appreciation for hard work, dedication, and family. With a father in building construction and education, and an entrepreneurial mother who owned and managed a neighborhood grocer for many years before devoting herself to homemaking fulltime, he developed a solid foundation in perseverance, excellence, and compassion. Following in his father’s footsteps, Patrice initially pursued a career in construction, even having the privilege of learning directly from his father in college.

After migrating to the US with his wife, it was his second career as a nurse that truly shaped his vision for Hibiscus House. Educated to bachelor’s level and with extensive experience of caring for critically ill patients, Patrice developed a holistic approach to health and well-being. His work during the COVID-19 pandemic, traveling to high-need areas to provide critical care, further reinforced his commitment to creating a safe and supportive environment for those in need.

Patrice’s approach ensures that Hibiscus House remains a safe, nurturing environment, where residents feel secure, supported, and valued. His leadership reflects a commitment to excellence and is dedicated to meeting each resident’s unique needs.
